Think Great Crested Newts! (Feb 10)

It’s time to think about Great crested newts as the season for survey is fast approaching, with the optimal survey window starting in March.

Great crested newts (GCN) are a European Protected Species and robustly protected by UK law.  An offence can easily be committed if GCNs or their habitats are damaged or destroyed.

GCNs breed in ponds but spend much of the year in surrounding terrestrial habitats, ranging 500m or more from their breeding sites.  Protection is afforded to the animals themselves, ponds that they use, and the surrounding 500m of terrestrial land.

If your development will impact on ponds or surrounding habitats, GCN assessment or survey is necessary. Lengthy and costly delays can occur if the possible presence of GCNs is ignored.

Just Ecology is very experienced in the assessment of habitats for GCN, and in surveys and mitigation for this species.  Conduct us to discuss your particular requirement and we’ll be delighted to help you.
